Veyyāvacca : Service

'Should a person do good,
let him do it again and again.
Let him find pleasure therein,
for blissful is the accumulation of good.'

'Puññaṃ ce puriso
kayirā kayirāthetaṃ punappunaṃ
Tamhi chandaṃ kayirātha
sukho puññassa uccayo.'

- Dhammapada Verse 118

Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda once told this story
about being human.

Once, he was about to board a plane at the old airport in Subang Jaya, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, where passengers had to climb a staircase in order to enter the plane. When the boarding call came, all passengers queued to board the plane.

An old Malay lady was the first passenger in the queue and as she was about to enter the plane, her shoe strap broke, and her shoe fell right down to the bottom of the stairway. Venerable was the last person waiting to board the plane, and was standing at the end of the queue. The shoe fell right next to him. Picking up the shoe, he told the lady to remain where she was and that he would bring it up to her. When he finally reached the plane and handed the shoe over to her, the lady was quite beyond words and exclaimed, "I never expect you as a Buddhist monk to carry my shoe all the way for me."

With a kind smile, Venerable calmly replied, "I carry this shoe for you not because I am a Buddhist monk - but because I am a human being. It is only human to help another person."

'.. Serving makes us aware of our wholeness and its power. The wholeness in us serves the wholeness in others and the wholeness in life. The wholeness in you is the same as the wholeness in me. Service is a relationship between equals: our service strengthens us as well as others. Fixing and helping are draining, and over time we may burn out, but service is renewing. When we serve, our work itself will renew us. In helping we may find a sense of satisfaction; in serving we find a sense of gratitude. ..'
